Joyous Brush  |  Tehwan Tso

Chinese brush painting, with its emphasis on the beauty of simplicity, flowing brush strokes, and graceful designs, reflects time-honored principles of Chinese philosophy and culture. Incorporating observation, a vital aspect in steps two and five of the Scientific Method, Tehwan encourages students to develop a different way of thinking by following instructions and manipulating images. Students learn to observe critically, practice purposefully, express deliberately, explore creatively and compose artistically. Students work with bamboo brushes, using ink or water color on rice paper to explore color theory while loading the brushes with the three primary colors and white. They will develop confidence in their painting through demonstrations, instructions and practice. This workshop’s focus on observation highlights the similarities between art and science classes!

Tehwan Tso

Tehwan Tso was born into an artist family in Taiwan, where her father was a professor of fine art and an artist who specialized in oil portraits. Tehwan studied Chinese brush painting under an artist in Taiwan until she moved to New York at the age of 15. Painting became her favorite hobby and secondary occupation during her school years, technical career and home schooling years.

Tehwan has taught art classes at The Art Place in Marietta, The Art Station in Kennesaw, Kennesaw State University Continuing Education, Cherokee Arts Council, Callaway Gardens, You Gotta Have Art, First Baptist Church Woodstock, Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Atlanta Chinese School, Cobb County Artists in School Program, and The School Art Program in Fulton County. A promotional program for Cobb County Art Centers featured Tehwan on TV23 community television channel. A full-page article in the Marietta Journal also featured her art work and instructional classes.

Tehwan has demonstrated floral brush painting in the Southeastern Flower Show at the World Congress Center. She has also had solo exhibitions at East Cobb Senior Center, Callaway Gardens Discovery Center, Kennesaw State University Confucius Center, The Art Station, Glimpses of His Glory Gallery, and Central United Congregational Church.
