Susan B. Anthony: Failure is Impossible  |  Cathy Kaemmerlen

Her mourners called her “The Mother of Us All.” Anti-slavery campaigner, temperance leader, suffragette, Susan B. Anthony devoted her life to securing equal rights for women. Cathy chronicles Anthony’s cross-country travels, her fiery speeches, and her arrest and conviction in 1872 for voting in the presidential election and challenging the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments to the Constitution. Although she did not live to see the passage of the nineteenth amendment giving women the right to vote, her courageous struggle and indomitable spirit remind students that one person can change the world—as long as failure is not an option.

Georgia Performance Standards:

  • SS5CG3b - The students will explain how amendments to the U.S. Constitution have maintained a representative democracy and explain how voting rights were protected by the 15, 19, 23rd, 24th, and 26th amendments.
  • SS3H2 - The students will discuss the lives of Americans who expanded people's rights and freedoms in a democracy including Susan B. Anthony (women's rights).
  • SS6CG3b - The students will explain how governments determine citizen participation: autocratic, oligarchic, and democratic.
